The term pinched nerve refers to a form of damage or injury done to a nerve or multiple nerves. A pinched nerve can be a result of injury due to compression, stretching, or constriction.
Most common back pain conditions are usually treatable through conservative methods, but unlike these other back pain problems conventional treatment methods for foraminal stenosis rarely provide much back pain relief.
Even though there are differences in where your spinal stenosis may affect you anatomically, the symptoms are very similar and usually the condition is just referred to as spinal stenosis and the specifics are dropped.
The spinous process is a bony prominence which each vertebrae has, offering protection to the spinal cords nervous tissue. In front of the spinal cord there is also a strong bony body that provides the support weight bearing of all tissues above the buttocks. Located on each side of the posterior part of the vertebrae there are facet joints allowing for each vertebrae to interact with the vertebrae above and below it.
Arthritis of the spine usually develops over time. Early on, a person may only experience joint aches after physical work or exercise, which fades and then returns as the affected joint is used or overused.
Treatments
A laminotomy is an arthroscopic approach to opening the spinal canal, without need for general anesthesia. Through the laminotomy procedure, pressure is relieve from the spinal canal for the exiting nerve root and spinal cord. A laminotomy can be performed in an outpatient surgical setting.
When you fuse an area of the spine you lose mobility in that particular region. The spine is very mobile and fusing vertebrae together causes extreme wear and tear on the vertebrae (and discs) above and below the area of the fusion because they are trying to compensate for the area that is now immobile.
The facet joints are the joint structures that connect the vertebrae to one another. Thermal ablation refers to the laser eradication of the effected nerve.
A Facet Thermal Ablation is used to treat Facet Disease, Facet Joint Syndrome, Facet Hypertrophy, Facet Arthritis, Degenerative Facet Joints
The goal of the percutaneous discectomy is to achieve pain relief through the removal of damaged material that is placing pressure on the never root or spinal cord. A percutaneous discectomy is preformed without the need for general anesthesia. Because of this, the procedure is able to be preformed in an outpatient surgical setting.
A foraminotomy is performed to relieve the symptoms of nerve root compression in cases where the foramen is being compressed by bone, disc, scar tissue, or excessive ligament development and results in a pinched nerve.
Symptoms
When space around the nerves in the spine becomes restricted and pressure is applied, a tingling sensation may be felt in the arms, or legs.
Muscular weakness can often be a sign back problems compressing nerve roots or the spinal cord.
A loss of bladder or bowel control can show signs and symptoms of cauda equina syndrome, a serious condition requiring immediate medical attention
Leg pain is a symptom commonly felt when nerves in the lumbar region of the back are compressed or irritated.
Scar tissue in the back may compress nerves leading to numb sensations in the patients extremities.
Causes
The amount of scar tissue developed from a surgical procedure is dependent on the amount of damage done to surround tissue and muscle.
With repetitive back injury the body's natural healing process will continue to aid in developing scar tissue in the back
Repetitive motion eventually aids in the creation of binding scar tissue in the back.
