Scar Tissue Sufferers May be Candidates for A Procedure at Laser Spine Institute
If you’ve undergone back or neck surgery and scar tissue formation has caused more back or neck pain, LSI may be able to help. We offer a procedure called a laminotomy that can often treat the pain associated with epidural fibrosis-- the scientific name for nerve root compression by scar tissue. Epidural fibrosis sometimes occurs after traditional open-back or neck surgery because a lot of muscle and other tissues are cut and torn in the process. As the body heals those wounds, it creates tough, fibrous scar tissue, which is bulkier than regular tissue and can sometimes press on nerves.
During a laminotomy, an LSI surgeon carefully removes a portion of the lamina—a bony plate on each vertebra that protects the spinal cord—to allow more room for the neural tissue which was previously crowded. Because we perform this procedure with innovative endoscopic techniques, it’s unlikely to create a large amount of new scar tissue that could cause even more problems. Endoscopic procedures are performed by making a small incision in the neck or back and gently sliding a tube through the incision and to the procedure site. Muscle and other tissue are gently pushed out of the way rather than cut, and small tools are used to perform the procedure through the tube. This type of procedure is much gentler than traditional surgery because it doesn’t involve as much cutting of muscle or skin, and results in less damage to tissue. The result is a quick recovery time, and less likelihood for new scar tissue.
If you’d like to learn more about our laminotomy procedure, or any of the other services we offer, contact LSI today. We’ll review your CT scan or MRI and let you know if you’re a good candidate.
